First Impression of America (part 2): diversity

Although I knew America is a country of immigrants and a large "melting pot", I'd never experienced it in person until I arrived in America this summer. America's diversity lies in many aspects but in my eyes, maybe also superficially, first in terms of races, secondly in terms of diet.
As for different races, you can find white people, black people, yellow people side by side in almost anywhere in the United States. Among white people are offspring of immigrants from Italy, France, German, Russia, England, Ireland, Spain, Mexico, Israel, India, so on and so forth. Among black people are offspring of immigrants from different African countries. Among yellow people are first generation or second generation, or third generation of Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, Malaysian, etc. I was very amazed that there are so many Chinese people, immigrants and students here. And what amazed me more is that people here seem to be quite used to the diversity of different people.

The second thing which shows America's diversity can be seen from the different kinds of food in America. I found the food provided in restaurants or snack market are extremely international. In Boston's Quincy Market, I found a variety of food or snacks. Here in America you can find food originating from China like rice, spring roll, sour and sweet chicken, Chaomian, Udon noodle soup, et. You can also find food from Italy, such as pizza, spaghetti.  You can find food originating from India, like food with curry. You can also find food originating from Japan like Sushi.  Of course you can find a lot more popular food like deli, pretzel, donuts, subways, various different kinds of  hamburgers, rolls, pies, pastries, chocolates, crackers, snacks, cookies, cakes, bread.

  1. I find these interesting and insightful observations...we become very used to this diversity and forget the value of it until it is pointed out to us.
